As deacon of a secret congregation during the reign of the Catholic Queen Mary, Protestant Cuthbert Simson or Simpson bore the responsibility of keeping membership rolls. He was arrested in 1558 at a clandestine meeting in the Saracen’s Head Inn in Islington. Following accusations of being a heretic and a traitor, he was subjected to the rack, a tortuous “enhanced interrogation” in an effort to obtain the identities of the membership. He refused to co-operate and was burned at Smithfield having withstood harrowing torture in the Tower of London. RMPDJ6HE–As deacon of a secret congregation during the reign of the Catholic Queen Mary, Protestant Cuthbert Simson or Simpson bore the responsibility of keeping membership rolls.
