RM2RB44HX–An old engraving of using ‘Nonkreem’ bellows in an early smelting foundry in northern India. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. These bellows were used in smelting iron-containing sand over charcoal fires. The double-action bellows here are worked by a man and a woman standing on them. The flaps are raised by hand and expanded by using their feet. A tube made from bamboo concentrating the blasts of air from the bellows through a small hole cut in a piece of stone and on to the fire containing the sand for smelting. The resulting lumps of iron are seen bottom left.
