An old engraving of The Great Melbourne Telescope, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia c.1869. It is from a mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. The Great Melbourne Telescope was built by the Grubb Telescope Company in Dublin, Ireland in 1868. It was installed at the Melbourne Observatory in 1869. With a 48-inch (1.2 metre) diameter primary mirror, it was one of the largest telescopes of the late 19th century. In 1945 the Observatory closed and the telescope was moved to the Mount Stromlo Observatory near Canberra. In 2003 the telescope was severely damaged in a bushfire.
