RMW0KWDB–Sophocles is one of three ancient Greek tragedians whose plays have survived. Sophocles was an Athenian of the deme of Colonus; a tragic poet born in the 73rd Olympiad (488-5 B.C. He was the first to employ three actors and the tritagonist, as he is called, and can be seen here bringing in a chorus of fifteen youths. He wrote over 120 plays during the course of his life, but only seven have survived in a complete form.

RMJH2G0E–Alcibiades, was a prominent Athenian statesman, orator, and general. After the Battle of Aegospotami, the last major battle of the Peloponnesian War, that took place in 405 BC. Alcibiades took refuge in Phrygia, with the object of securing the aid of Artaxerxes against Sparta. In 404 BC, as he was about to set out for the Persian court, his residence was surrounded and set on fire. Seeing no chance of escape he rushed out on his assassins, dagger in hand, and was killed by a shower of arrows.

RMW21DWG–Following the largest expedition in the Peloponnesian War and their defeat in the sea battle in Syracuse harbour in 413 BC, 40,000 Athenians and allied troops retreated. The Syracusans blocked the planned route through Acreaen Cliff Pass, and the Athenians were forced back to their starting point. Demosthenes and his men began a night march in a different direction, but the Syracusans bombarded the Athenian troops with javelins until Demosthenes surrendered. Meanwhile the Syracusans caught up with Nicias and his half of the army and bombarded them until they also surrendered.

The first impetus of the Athenian attack carried them through the Syracusan vessels guarding the boom across the harbour mouth. The Athenians began loosening the chained merchantmen, but other Syracusan warships appeared from all directions and the fighting spread throughout the harbour, from which Syracuse and Sparta Athens and its allies emerged victorious

His orations constitute a significant expression of contemporary Athenian intellectual prowess and provide an insight into the politics and culture of ancient Greece during the 4th century BC. After the death of Philip II, King of Macedonia, Demosthenes played a leading part in his city's uprising against Alexander the Great. However, his efforts failed and Alexander's successor in Athens, Antipater, sent his men to track Demosthenes down. Demosthenes took his own life, in order to avoid arrest.

It was fought between the citizens of Athens, aided by Plataea, and a Persian force commanded by Datis and Artaphernes. The battle was the culmination of the first attempt by Persia, under King Darius I, to subjugate Greece. The Greek army decisively defeated the more numerous Persians, marking a turning point in the Greco-Persian Wars.
