Iraq: ‘Raft Conveying Winged Bull to Baghdad'. Watercolour painting by Frederick Charles Cooper (1819-1883), 1849-1850. Having excavated the ruins of Babylon and Nineveh, and unearthed countless artifacts that had lain undisturbed for some 2,730 years, the British Museum then had to transport the treasures to England. They did this by floating them on wooden rafts, which were supported by inflated sheep- and goatskins, to Basra where the British navy were on hand to load them onto ships. In this watercolour, a raft carrying a statue of an Assyrian winged bull is floated down the Tigris river. The late 10th Century tower at Earls Barton was probably originally a tower nave, the ground floor serving as the main body of the church with a small chancel annexed to it to the east. The doorway on the west side of the tower, allowed access to the outside. The upper floors possibly provided accommodation for the priest or acted as a safe-haven to house treasures, and there is a belfry at the uppermost storey. Northamptonshire, England.
