RM2B01CD0–Vietnam: John Paul Vann (2 July 1924 - 9 June 1972) relaxing in his office in Saigon, c. 1966. John Paul Vann was a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army, later retired, who became well-known for his role in the Vietnam War, especially in the Central Highlands and around Kontum. Although a civilian by the time the Vietnam War reached its zenith, he returned to active service under the auspices of the United States Agency for International Development, becoming the first civilian to command troops in regular combat there. Vann died in a helicopter crash in the Central Highlands in 1972.
