With 15,300 mounted troops, it was one of the largest cavalry battles in Central Europe during the Middle Ages.

Prussian troops under General Friedrich August von Fink were moved to attack the lines of communication between Marshal Daun's Austrian army in Dresden and Bohemia. The conflict arose from issues left unresolved by the War of the Austrian Succession, with the war breaking out over territorial disputes between Prussia and Austria, which wanted to regain Silesia after it was captured by Prussia in the previous war. Britain, France, and Spain fought both in Europe and overseas with land-based armies and naval forces.
