RMPCTMTN–Portrait of Charles Howard, 1st Earl of Nottingham, (1536-1624), known as Howard of Effingham, was an English statesman and Lord High Admiral under Elizabeth I and James I. He was commander of the English forces during the battles against the Spanish Armada and was chiefly responsible after Francis Drake for the victory that saved England from invasion by the Spanish Empire.

RMRHPNEG–At the time of the Armada, Elizabeth reviews the troops at Tilbury. By Henry Justice Ford (1860-1941). The Spanish Armada (Grande y Felicísima Armada) was a Habsburg Spanish fleet of 130 ships, under the command of the Duke of Medina Sidonia, with the purpose of escorting an army from Flanders to invade England. The aim was to overthrow Queen Elizabeth I and her establishment of Protestantism in England. On 8th August 1588 Elizabeth went to Tilbury to encourage her forces, and the next day, legend has it, arrived on horseback in her own personal battle armour.

RMPCTMWM–A portrait of Sir Francis Drake (1540-1596), English sea captain, privateer, slave trader, naval officer and explorer of the Elizabethan era. Drake carried out the second circumnavigation of the world in a single expedition, from 1577 to 1580, and was the first to complete the voyage as captain while leading the expedition throughout the entire circumnavigation. Queen Elizabeth I awarded Drake a knighthood in 1581 which he received on the Golden Hind in Deptford. As a Vice Admiral, he was second-in-command of the English fleet in the battle against the Spanish Armada in 1588.

Vice Admiral Sir Francis Drake was an English sea captain, privateer, circumnavigator, slaver, a renowned pirate and a politician of the Elizabethan era. Elizabeth I of England awarded Drake a knighthood in 1581. He was second-in-command of the English fleet against the Spanish Armada in 1588, subordinate only to Charles Howard and the Queen herself. He died of dysentery in January 1596 after unsuccessfully attacking San Juan, Puerto Rico.

RMPCTMTY–A Portrait of Sir Walter Raleigh (1554-1618) was an English landed gentleman, writer, poet, soldier, politician, courtier, spy and explorer. He became a favourite of Queen Elizabeth I and in 1585, was knighted and appointed warden of the stannaries - the tin mines of Cornwall and Devon, Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall, and vice-admiral of the two counties. He sat in parliament as member for Devonshire in 1585 and 1586. In the Armada year of 1588, Raleigh had some involvement with defence against the Spanish at Devon when his ship, the Ark Raleigh, became Lord High Admiral Howard's flagship.

RMPCTMWT–Queen Elizabeth's Armoury in the Tower of London, England. Formerly called the Spanish Armoury, it was the prison of Sir Walter Raleigh. It became a depositary of medieval weaponry. At the end of the room is a portrait of the queen on a white horse on her way to a thanksgiving at St Paul's Cathedral for the successful outcome to the Spanish Armada.
