Her citizens had become very wealthy by trade, but they had lost their ancient spirit and courage. Alaric, with an army of Gothic barbarians, ravaged Greece, and was received by the degenerate Athenians as a conqueror. Both men and women brought him presents, knelt at his feet, and did all that slavish cowardice could suggest to please him.
