This passive device used to reflect and focus, concentrate or amplify sound waves. Here the source of the sound is a ticking pocket watch (‘w’) placed near one concave reflector, in line with its centre. The sound waves will be ‘received’ by that mirror and reflected on to the second mirror and can be heard at point ‘e’, again in line with the reflector’s centre.
