Fully titled Anthony Ashley Cooper, 7th Earl of Shaftesbury KG (1801 – 1885), he was a strong supporter of the Duke of Wellington and campaigned for Pauper Lunatics in the County of Middlesex and those in Lunatic Asylums. Ashley was also involved in framing the County Lunatic Asylums (England) Act 1828 and the Madhouses Act 1828. He also campaigned against child labour and general reforms in factories and workplaces, chimney sweeps 'climbing boys' and 'ragged schools'.
