The Trout Lily is a very common spring wildflower. Its leaves, which are easily recognized by there mottled appearance, give the flower its name as they resemble the spots of a brook or brown trout. It is also sometimes known as the Dogtooth Violet, named so due to the shape of the root. Not a very fitting name considering it doesn't belong to the Violet family. It blooms from March through June and can be found in rich woods, often in fairly large colonies. Mingus Mill is located off US 441 just outside of Cherokee, NC in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It is a turbine mill vs. a water wheel powered mill. The water from the sluice fills a hollow column approximagely 4' square and 12-15 ft. tall. The pressure from this column of water is sufficient to drive the turbine and generate 11 hp. The mill is still operational on a daily basis and sells products to the public.
