The exterior of the restored St Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin Ireland. In 1805, the north transept was in ruins and the south transept was in a poor condition. Major reconstruction, paid for by Benjamin Guinness, in 1860–65, was inspired by the fear that the cathedral was in imminent danger of collapse, so much of the current building and decoration dates from the Victorian era and few records of the work survive today. A failure to preserve records means that little is known as to how much of the current building is genuinely mediæval and how much is Victorian pastiche. The earliest reference to Stoke church in Buckinghamshire, England occurs in the mid-12th century, when it was granted to Notley Abbey (Bucks.) by Walter Giffard, the overlord of the manor, and his wife. He founded this abbey—one of the few houses of Arrouasian canons in England—some time before 1164, the year of his death. The church of St Peter was built in the 12th century, and both the chancel arch and the fine south doorway are Romanesque work of this period. But by the mid-19th century the church was in a dilapidated condition, but restored 1868–9. An old Victorian view of the main pool at the Roman Baths in Bath, Somerset, England, UK c.1880. The Roman Baths are well-preserved thermae. This view shows much of the remains are ruins and is before the Victorian restoration and reconstruction work began. The baths were sunken and the higher street level can be seen in the background. The baths, designed for public bathing, were used until the end of Roman rule in Britain in the 5th century AD. Victorian expansion of the baths complex was in the Neoclassical style. It is a major tourist attraction in the UK. Hampton Court Palace in the borough of Richmond upon Thames, built in 1515 for Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, a favourite of King Henry VIII until he fell from favour. The cardinal gave the palace to the King who later enlarged it. In the 17th century, King William III's massive rebuilding and expansion work, intended to rival Versailles, destroyed much of the Tudor palace. Work ceased in 1694, leaving the palace in two distinct contrasting architectural styles, domestic Tudor and Baroque, yet unity exists due to the use of pink bricks and a symmetrical, if vague, balancing of successive low wings. Parliament House in Edinburgh, Scotland, was home to the pre-Union Parliament of Scotland, and is located in the Old Town, just off the Royal Mile, beside St Giles Cathedral. It was completed in 1639 to the design of James Murray. After the Act of Union 1707, the Parliament of Scotland was adjourned, and the building ceased to be used for its original function. The Hall was used for the sitting of courts, but in recent times has been subject to restoration work and now remains open as a meeting place for lawyers.
