The Printing press, is a machine by which text and images are transferred to paper or other media by means of ink. It was in Europe that printing first became mechanized when a printing press was invented in the Holy Roman Empire by the German Johannes Gutenberg around 1440, based on existing screw presses. Metal presses began to appear late in the 18th century, at about which time the advantages of the cylinder were first perceived and the application of steam power used to operate them. An old engraving showing Bishop’s floating derrick c.1850. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. In this illustration the massive steam-powered derrick is lifting another ship. It was a flat-bottomed boat, built by the Thames Iron Shipbuilding Company of Blackwall, London, England, UK to raise sunken ships. It was 270 feet in length and had a 90-foot beam. Watertight compartments could be filled with seawater to counterbalance any weight on the opposite side of the vessel when lifting. Derricks mounted on dedicated vessels are also known as sheerlegs. An old engraving of a steam powered lawn-mower. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. The lawn mower was invented by Englishman Edwin Beard Budding in 1830. His hand-mower was for cutting grass on sports grounds. As an alternative to the scythe, it could cut closer to the ground. Horses were used to pull larger mowers a decade later and steam-powered lawnmowers were introduced in the 1890s, but were heavy and bulky machines. An old engraving of a worker pushing timber through a circular saw in the 1800s. It is from a Victorian book of the 1890s on discoveries and inventions during the 1800s. Here the factory table saw is powered by steam power via a belt system. A circular saw is a power-saw using a toothed (or abrasive) disc or blade to cut materials using a rotary motion spinning around an arbor. Circular saws were invented in the late 18th century and were in common use in sawmills by the mid-1800s. An old engraving of the Watt double-acting steam engine of the 1700s. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. James Watt developed his designs with support from Matthew Boulton. The condenser and the cylinder were separate so condensation occurred without significant loss of heat from the cylinder. Watt introduced two cylinder, double-acting designs. With the beam connected to the piston shaft (top centre), the motion of the beam could also turn a wheel (right). The main wheel drove a rotating central shaft and belts and gears could be attached to drive machinery. An old engraving of a Nasmyth Steam Hammer of the mid-1800s. It is from a Victorian book of the 1890s on discoveries and inventions during the 1800s. A steam hammer, also called a drop hammer, is an industrial power hammer driven by steam that is used for tasks such as shaping forgings and driving piles. Usually the hammer is attached to a piston that slides within a cylinder. The concept of the steam hammer was described by James Watt in 1784, but it was not until 1840 that the first working steam hammer was built by James Nasmyth. An old engraving of steam shovel or navvy during Victorian times. It is from a book of the 1890s on discoveries and inventions during the 1800s. A steam shovel is a large steam-powered excavating machine designed for lifting and moving material such as rock and soil. An old engraving of a Victorian ‘road locomotive’ made by Ransomes, Sims and Jefferies of Ipswich, Suffolk, England, UK. It is from a mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. This ‘self-moving engine’ is a lightweight version as road locomotives were designed for heavy haulage on the public roads. They were usually larger than the normal traction engine and were fitted with three-speed gearing. They were also sprung on both front and rear axles. An extra water tank was fitted under the boiler so that greater distances could be travelled. They could pull loads of up to 120 tons. An old engraving showing a very tall chimney, smokestack, stack or funnel, at the front of a steam rail locomotive in the 1800s. It is from a mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. The chimney is the part of the locomotive through which smoke leaves the boiler. In addition, cylinder steam exhaust vents through it. This large bulbous or balloon style of stack (a Pett’s Pipe) is more typical of North American railroads. A straight chimney was used for burning coal, diamond-shaped stacks could be used for coal or wood, and balloon stacks were for wood-burners. An old engraving showing submarine excavations and the tunnels at Hell Gate under the East River at Hallett’s Point, New York City, USA c.1875. It is from a Victorian book of the 1880s. In 1851, to aid navigation, the US Army Corps of Engineers began to clear the great obstruction for ships called Hallett's Point. Operations for removing the reef here were begun in 1869. A shaft was sunk and ten tunnels were dug. Numerous holes drilled into the reef which were then to be packed with explosives. Here the steam-powered machine is drilling out holes in which the explosives are then packed.
