Zeng Guofan, Marquis Yiyong, birth name Zeng Zicheng and courtesy name Bohan, was an eminent Han Chinese official, general and devout Confucian scholar of the late Qing Dynasty. Zeng raised the Xiang Army to fight effectively against the Taiping Rebellion and restored the stability of the Qing Empire alongside other prominent figures such as Zuo Zongtang and Li Hongzhang, setting the scene for the era known as the 'Tongzhi Restoration'.

RM2B01R14–Vietnam: Paul Philastre (7 February 1837 - 11 September 1902), French colonial administrator, c. 1860s. Paul-Louis-Félix Philastre was a French colonial administrator, diplomat and scholar. Philastre graduated from the French naval academy in 1857 and took service on the Avalanche, arriving in Cochinchina in 1861. In 1863, Philastre was appointed inspector of native affairs in a village in the Mekong river delta and two years later he obtained the position of director of native legal affairs. In 1868, he became ill and was forced to return to France, though came back to Indochina in 1873.

RM2B016E9–Japan: Tokugawa Yoshinobu (28 October 28 1837 – 22 November 1913), 15th and last ruler of the Tokugawa Shogunate (r. 1866-1867). Portrait, c. 1860s. Tokugawa Yoshinobu, born Matsudaira Shichiromaro and also known as Keiki, was the 15th and last shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate. He was chosen to succeed Tokugawa Iemochi in 1866, and immediately ordered massive governmental reforms. He modernised the Japanese army and purchased foreign equipment, but was forced to resign in 1867 by rebelling daimyos, leading to the Boshin War. Yoshinobu went into quiet retirement as Japan changed.

Francis Garnier was a French officer and explorer known for his exploration of the Mekong River in Southeast Asia. In 1873 Garnier was sent to Tonkin by Admiral Dupré, the governor of Cochinchina, to resolve a dispute between the Vietnamese authorities and the French entrepreneur Jean Dupuis. Persuaded that the time was ripe for a French conquest of Tonkin, Garnier captured Hanoi, the capital of Tonkin, with a mere 180 men.
