By the early 17th century Upper Street in Islington in London, England had a sprinkling of gentlemen’s houses and tradesmen’s cottages. But before the century was out the gentry had begun to depart and several of their houses were converted to inns. The most interesting hostelry in old Islington was the old 'Queen's Head,' at the corner of Queen's Head Lane. Tradition had long connected this house with the name of Sir Walter Raleigh, though with no sufficient reason. The inn at Charmouth in Dorset, England, now known as Abbots House, gave shelter to the disguised, fugitive King Charles II on 22 September 1651, when he came looking for a boat to take him to France following defeat at the Battle of Worcester. A small trading ship bound for St Malo was found, and the master, Stephen Limbry, agreed to pick up the King from Charmouth beach and transport him to the ship, but just two hours before the pick up Limbry told his wife, who locked him in his room and stole his clothes to ensure he would not become involved. The galleried courtyard of the Blue Boar Tavern in Holborn, London cluttered with carriages, horses and luggage. Demolished in 1864 it was infamous as a stop off en route to the hangings at Tyburn. It was here that history was made when one of Cromwell's spies at the palace informed him that he and Henry Ireton'd death was decreed and a letter to that effect was on it's way from the King to the Queen. When it was discovered Cromwell and Ireton disguised themselves as soldiers and at swordpoint, searched the messenger, opened the letter and found that the King was about to end the rebellion.
