Warning signs posted at the entrance of a damaged multistory apartment building in the San Francisco Marina District after the 1989 San Francisco Earthquake. The 1989 7.1 Loma Prieta earthquake struck the Bay Area of California on 10/17/1998 at 17:04 during the start of the World Series Baseball game between San Francisco and Oakland California. The Marina District along San Francisco Bay was the hardest hit area. A major freeway, Interstate 880, in Oakland also collapsed. It is estimated that more than 50 people died during the 1989 earthquake and property damage in Northern California was estimated to be over four Billion dollars, USD. According to the United States Geological Service (USGS) the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake was the largest in the region since the 1906 San Francisco quake. Photo by Chuck Nacke
