The Manhattan Bridge, begun in 1901, opened in 1909 and completed in 1912 at a cost of $ 31 million, was the last of three suspension bridges over the Lower East River. The bridge has a total length of 2089 m (6855 ft), width of 37m (120 ft) and clearance of 41.1 m (135 ft). The longest span, between the 2-dimensional, 102 m high (336 ft) nickel steel towers, is 451 m (1484 ft). The nickel steel deck carries 7 lanes of roadway, 4 subway tracks, pedestrians and bicycles between Brooklyn Dumbo and Lower Manhattan. The upper deck carries 2 roadways (4 vehicle lanes in one direction, 3 in the other). The lower deck carries 4 subway tracks, a walkway and bikeway. Rebuilding of the bridge, due to corrosion and stress, began in 1982. The Manhattan Bridge, seen here from the Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park, , was designated a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers in 2009. With the upstream Williamsburg Bridge, it is only one of two suspension bridges in New York carrying road and rail traffic.
