These graves of U.S. Navy Sailors from 1804 a corner of this 19th. century Protestant Christian cemetery in Tripoli may be the oldest known graves of U.S. military personnel killed in action abroad. They died when their ship, the USS Intrepid, exploded in Tripoli harbor in an attempt to destroy the fleet of the Ottoman governor and free 304 U.S. hostages being held in the town prison.
