More information:

Townend is a 17th century yeoman's home in the village of Troutbeck. Made of rendered whitewashed stone and slate roofed, the home is an excellent example of Lake District vernacular architecture. Windows are mullioned, and there are three massive cylindrical chimneys. Inside the home are stone floors and a farm kitchen. The house was divided into two sections: one for living and one for work. In the 17th century a north wing was added with a new staircase, bedroom, and parlour. In 1739 a west wing was built. The 19th century saw some kitchen and fireplace modernization. Townend by Risto HurmalainenThe Browne family owned and occupied the house from 1626 to 1943. They were well-to-do as attested to by much of the original contents still resident in the house: oak panelling, books, papers, carved furniture, and other domestic utensils and devices. A baby's cradle has a hidden compartment. Townend by Tony RichardA living history exhibition includes actors playing the part of various family members who tell their stories. Browne held an important position as High Constable in 1667, and his son followed in his footsteps. The owners raised Herdwick sheep whose strong wool was spun and woven. The barn (across the road) is made of unrendered slate. This fascinating home is a must-see for all Lakeland visitors. Townend (National Trust) is located at the south end of the village of Troutbeck 3 miles north of Windermere off the A592 on a minor road.
