The genus Paphiopedilum, includes about fifty species of orchids native to tropical Malaysia, Sumatra and nearby islands. Paphiopedilum The name derives from the greek "paphia" the goddess of Paphos and Aphrodite "Pedilon" which means sandalwood, "the sandal of Aphrodite" or "slipper" because of the shape of the flower. Terrestrial plants and are very rarely epiphytes. Orchids are in development SIMPODIALE with a creeping rhizomatous stem more or less underground and have no pseudobulbs. The beauty of the orchid Paphiopedilum is due not only flowers but also leaves, leathery and persistent that arise directly from the rhizome, often variegated in various ways that make it very decorative even without flowers.
