The Cévennes, in the south of France, has, for centuries enjoyed a reputation for sheltering dissidents and fugitives from oppressive regimes. This memorial commemorates the men and women members of the French Resistance who died fighting the occupying German Army during World War 2. There are, surprisingly, a number of German names on the monument. These men, like many of the French listed on the stone, were opposed to Fascism and Nazism and many had fought for the International Brigade in Spain.
