In March of 2007, over 600, 000 mini death-flags were displayed at Lewis & Clark College, in Portland, Oregon, in the United States. The flags in this photo stood like ominous gravestones neatly arranged in front of the Frank Manor House at the college. The white flags and red flags represented people killed in the Iraq War, that began in 2003. Red stands for America soldiers (1 for 1, about 3, 000), and white stands for Iraqi soldiers and civilians (1 flag for every six people killed). The 655, 000 Iraqis who had been killed before march of 2007 were represented by 112, 000 white flags spread throughout the Lewis and Clark College campus. With the college’s permission, the flags were prepared and displayed as part of a traveling exhibit put on by "Students For Democracy" (www.IraqPeaceProject.org). What if each white flag represented 6 Americans killed inside the U.S. and the red flags showed foreigners who came here to “save” us. Would we be happy with -- or even tolerant of the outcome? Would we feel “Saved?”
