The Rachel Whiteread Frieze on the front facade of the Whitechapel Gallery, Whitechapel High Street, Tower Hamlets in the east end of London, 2012. A planned mosaic designed by Walter Crane in 1901 was planned for above the entrance but costs prevented it. The Turner prize winning artist and sculptor Whiteread was commissioned by the London 2012 Festival - part of a series of cultural events to coincide with the Olympic games. Her 'tree of life' design is based on motifs elsewhere in the gallery and the branches and leaves are covered in gold leaf. Designed by Charles Harrison Townsend the Whitechapel gallery was founded in 1901.
