More information:

Foinikia is one of the most colourful villages of Santorini, reminding some villages in Mexico or Andalucia. It took its name from the tall palm tree which is outside the church of Agia Patrona since Finikia in Greek means palm tree. It is not very popular among the turists, because it has no view to the caldera, and it has stayed in the "shadow" of Oia, being only 2 km away. In the picturesque and very atmospheric village, you can see many of these houses with the "arched" roof, and many "canavas", a very typical architectonic element of Santorini. A "canava", is usually a rock-cut house, "carved" in the "soft" volcanic rocks, that offer a natural "air condition". Most of them where used for wine production and storage. Nowadays, many canavas have been bought by foreigners and converted in sweet little houses.
