More information:

Tate Britain is in the original Tate Gallery premises which opened in 1897 on the site of the Millbank prison. It was called the National Gallery of British Art but soon became known as the Tate Gallery after its founder, Sir Henry Tate. The gallery originally housed both British and Modern collections but, with the opening of Tate modern in March 2000, it was renamed Tate Britain and displays British art only.
