Coober Pedy, South AustraliaMore information:
Coober Pedy's name is an approximation of the Aboriginal kupa-piti, which means white man's hole - allegedly referring to the mines. The first opals were discovered here by a teenager in 1915 and mining started in earnest in 1916. The climate is a harsh desert one, so many of the residents live a troglodyte-style existence underground to avoid searing hot days and cold nights.
