Storm Desmond created the worst floods the Lake District has ever seen, wreaking havoc on the roads. The A591, the main road through the Lake District was closed after parts of it were washed away and other parts were left under mountains of rubble washed onto thew road from the slopes of Helvellyn. The Army has been brought in to help clear the road, though it is likely to remain closed for weeks if not months while the part that was washed away is repaired.
