Sent from Iona, St Aidan established a monastery on Lindisfarne, the island being given by King Oswald of Northumbria. Aidan became the first Bishop of Lindisfarne in 635. He died at Bamburgh in 651. The 16 th century castle was converted into a private house by Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1903. The grounds contain a walled garden by Gertrude Jekyll.
