More information:

Shell Beach has a great abundance of the shells of the cockle species Fragum erugatum, typically reaching a depth of 7 to 10 metres. The seawater in the area has a high salinity which has allowed the cockle to proliferate unchecked. Over time, the shells have formed a limestone that is known as Coquina.
