RM2HJCJND–Colorized illustration depicts The Battle of Cape Ecnomus, 256 BC. This Punic War naval battle, possibly the largest naval battle in history, took place off southern Sicily between the fleets of Carthage and the Roman Republic. The Carthaginians took the initiative and the battle devolved into three separate conflicts. After a prolonged and confused day of fighting, the Carthaginians were decisively defeated, losing 30 ships sunk and 64 captured to Roman losses of 24 ships sunk. RMW818GA–Julius Caesar addressing the malcontent legions in the Campus Martius. Julius Caesar had just returned from crushing the followers of his great rival, Pompey the Great. The people of Rome threw a party in 46 BCE that featured a naval battle on a man-made lake built in the Campus Martius filled with water from the nearby Tiber River. There, two fleets of biremes, triremes, and quadriremes with 4,000 galley slaves and 2,000 crew members on board clashed in a full-scale reconstruction of a naval battle known as the naumachia—from the Greek word for naval battle.

RMMEW7WY–15th Century Medieval English ships of warwere powered by sail or oar, or both. Frequent communications withEurope meant exposure to a variety of improvements. Ships in the north were influenced by Viking vessels, while those in the south by classical or Roman vessels. However, there was technological change as traditional construction methods were changed from clinker to carvel construction, which would dominate the building of large ships. The period would also see a shift from the steering oar or side rudder to the stern rudder and the development from single to multi-masted ships.
