The riots were sparked off by the stabbing of a black youth combined with tensions caused by the Metropolitan Police's Operation Swamp which began a week earlier. The operationw involved plain clothes police officers being dispatched into Brixton within five days almost 950 people were stopped and searched through the heavy use of the sus law - which allowed police to stop and search any individual on the basis of 'suspicion' of wrong-doing.
