Flowers thrive on Penshaw Hill - upon which Penshaw Monument stands - in Sunderland. The monument, dedicated to John George Lambton (the first Earl of Durham and the first Governor of the Province of Canada) dates back to 1844 and is a well known local landmark. It is modelled on the Temple of Hephaestus in Athens and the columns reach up 20 metres.
