The town of Dinan is fortified by ramparts and was defended by an imposing castle. Strategic point for traffic between Normandy and the north coast of Brittany, Dinan is built mainly on a hill. The city dominates the 75 m Rance, which flows north to empty into the Channel between St. Malo and Dinard. Dinan proposed long the bridge further north to cross the river Rance. La ville de Dinan est fortifiée par une ceinture de remparts et était défendue par un imposant château. Point stratégique pour la circulation entre la Normandie et la côte nord de Bretagne, Dinan est construite principalement sur une colline. La cité domine de 75 m la Rance qui coule vers le nord pour se jeter dans la Manche entre Saint-Malo et Dinard. Dinan proposa longtemps le pont le plus au nord pour traverser la Rance.
