Over the last quarter-century, a few Embera families pushed further north of Darien, settling in the jungles bordering the Chagres River -- a scant two-hour journey from cosmopolitan Panama City. Embera communities are scattered in this border wilderness, largely protected in national parks, including 318, 000 acre Chagres National Park and adjoining 55, 000 acre Soberania National Park.
