The landscape of Cappodocia was created around 30 million years ago when erupting volcanoes covered the area in ash. The ash solidified in to tuff mixed with layers of hard volcanic rock. The tuff has worn away over millenia creating some distintive formations including the capped-cone 'fairy chimneys' abundant in this area
