One of the new bioswales installed by the NYC Dept. of Environmental Protection is seen in the Boerum Hill neighborhood of Brooklyn in New York on Thursday, November 10, 2011. The bioswales are vegetated, over-sized tree pits with scuppers designed to collect storm water runoff, allowing it to seep into the ground as opposed to letting it run into the sewer system where it will cause a sewage overflow during heavy rainfall. Each of the four in existence will handle 1, 870 gallons of water per storm with ten under construction. (© Richard B. Levine)
