On December 13, 1862, the Union troops were defeated at Fredericksburg, Virignia. On December 11, the city had been heavily bombarded and several buildings set on fire. This picture is a sketch made by Henry Lovie on the morning of December 12. The streets were filled with furniture, carried out to be saved from the flames. Those who remained in the city had taken refuge in cellars and no one was killed.
