Old street of houses in the fabled city of Karkemish (various spellings). Excavations close to here on the Syrian border started in the 19th century to reveal a Hittite city. T E Lawrence (of Arabia) worked on the site in 1920. Some 1, 200 land mines were cleared from the area last year to recommence archaeological work
