Chief Inspector of Schools Mike Tomlinson answers questions about the Office for Standards in Education's (OFSTED) publication of 'Specialist schools : an evaluation of progress' at a press conference in central London. *The report claims that most specialist schools are extending the range of opportunities available to pupils and have a high level of commitment to creating a distinctive ethos and raising standards. 20/09/02 : Former Ofsted chief inspector Mike Tomlinson, who will inquire into the A-level grades row, began his career as a chemistry teacher before being appointed to Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Schools in 1978. Mr Tomlinson, 59, who grew up in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, was promoted to staff inspector for teacher training in 1984 and to chief inspector (secondary) in 1989.
