Firemen and police in front of the flame-ravaged house in New Cross Road, Deptford, South London, where a West Indian all-night birthday party ended in tragedy. 2/2/04: A new inquest into their deaths opens after the first hearing returned open verdicts. Circumstances surrounding the outbreak of the blaze have never been fully established, although it has been suggested that it may have been arson. 11/02/04: Members of the emergency services who attended the fire were giving evidence 20 years after the tragedy at a second inquest at Inner London Crown Court. Families of the victims, who believe the fire was started deliberately, hope this new inquest will return verdicts of unlawful killing by person or persons unknown. 06/05/2004 The long-awaited verdict from the second inquest into the 1981 New Cross fire, which killed 13 black youngsters, was being delivered Thursday 6th May 2004
