Mamayev Kurgan is a hill to the north of Stalingrad (now Volgograd) overlooking the city and the River Volga. Control of the hill was vitally important as whoever held it controlled the city. During the siege and battle for Stalingrad, it was fiercely fought over by the German 6th Army and the Red Army changing hands many times during the period August 1942 to February 1943. Both forces held parts of the hill at the same time. A monumental memorial was constructed between 1959 and 1967. The 82m high statue of the Motherland Calls holding a 27 m sword stands on the summit was designed by Yevgeny Vuchetich.
