The 'Day of the Dead' (El Dia de los Muertos) is a celebration in Mexico in which family and friends remember those who have died. Its origins are believed to date back thousands of years to an Aztec festival dedicated to the goddess Mictecacihuatl. It is now celebrated on November 1st and 2nd in connection with the Catholic holiday of All Saints' Day. The skull (colloquially called calavera) is a common symbol of the holiday.
