DORTAN, JURA, FRANCE, JULY 31, 2018: A picture shows the Memorial built after the war to pay homage to Dortan clergyman Alexis Jean-Marie Dubettier, shot by Nazi troops on July 12, 1944 .HISTORICAL ELEMENTS: The original village of Dortan was destroyed from July 12nd to July 22, 1944, and more or less 35 of its inhabitants (36 were killed while a lot of rapes and acts of torture were committed on the population by the 5th Regiment of Cossacks, a military unit belonging to the Eastern Legion, of the Wermacht. This slaughter was part of the Trettenfeld Operation held to wreck the underground fighters of the Ain (Maquis de l'Ain, in French). Burned on July 21, 1944, The village was completly destroyed. A new village was rebuilt after the war on a same site, This picture is part of a photographic essay called "Dortan, a martyred village".
