This species has a wide ranging distribution a sit can be found from the North Sea, throughout the Mediterranean Sea, along the Eastern Atlantic to South Africa. It is usually encountered solitary on sandy bottoms, sea gras areas or rocky reefs close to the shore, where is is looking for small bony fish, which can make up to 90 % of its diet. It uses it electric organs to capture its prey. The marbled electric ray can remain motionless, buried in the sand for several days. It is very slow moving and can handle low oxygen conditions.
