Magnolia Soulangeana Lennei a hybrid plant, deciduous tree at the Dundee Botanic Gardens. This hybrid magnolia, sometimes called the Chinese or saucer magnolia, is one of the best for smaller gardens as it remains a shapely shrub for many years, and even in maturity is a manageable small tree. Its varieties are robust shrubs, tolerant of a wide range of soils, including those slightly alkaline although they are not happy on shallow chalk. 'Lennei' is a fast-growing and free-flowering variety with large goblet-shaped blooms up to 10cm (4in) across, borne while young and appearing late in spring, often with a repeat flowering in autumn
