Looking down into the crossing of Tintern Abbey church with the chancel & south aisle (L & centre), the south transept & S entrance (R). Situated in the remote Wye Valley, the abbey was founded by Walter fitz Richard, Lord of Chepstow, in 1131: the first Cistercian foundation in Wales. The present church dates mainly from the great rebuilding undertaken by Roger Bigod in the late C13th.
