Lake Titicaca is world's highest navigable lake at 3, 820 meters above sea level and can be visited from either Bolivia or Peru. From the Peruvian town of Puno a visit can be made to the floating reed islands which are home to the Uros Indians. Known as the “willow people”, the Uros have lived since early times on these small man made islands made from compacted Totora reeds. Nowadays many of the young people leave the islands to live in Puno while the remaining population uses tourism as a way of providing extra income.
