Lew (Lewis) Wallace (1827-1905) was the American author of the classic novel Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ (1880). Wallace was also a Civil War Union General, a lawyer, a governor of the New Mexico Territory, and a U.S. Minister to the Ottoman Empire in Constantinople (present-day Istanbul), Turkey.
