After Ukrainian Independence and the end of the Soviet Union in 1991, the Square on Khreshchatyk street in central Kyiv was renamed Independence Square. The statue was removed from the square in 1991. In 2015 what was called “Decommunization in the Ukraine” the Ukrainian parliament passed legislation banning the promotion of symbols of “Communist and National Socialist totalitarian regimes.” There were more than 5, 500 Lenin monuments in the Ukraine in 1991, by the end of 2015 only 1, 300 of the statures remained.
